Spirituality is a brave search for the truth about existence, fearlessly peering into the mysterious nature of life. -Elizabeth Lesser

Spirituality is one of the most controversial yet misunderstood subjects due to its vagueness, obscurity, and beguiling complexity. Many people forget that spirituality is a journey of self-discovery, love, determination, and strength. Spirituality is entirely personal and is a unique and memorable adventure for many people. The journey that one may experience will be a distinctive one, and it is enlightening and complete with self-discovery and many changes that will impact lives for the better.

What is the Difference between Spirituality and Religion?

Many people are confused about spirituality and religion due to their many similarities, but they are two inconsistent subjects.

Spirituality can be seen as a universal and global experience that humans will encounter at a point in their lives. Spirituality is the act of finding new and impactful connections and seeking meaning in our lives through personal development. It is entirely self-guided and an experience that only one can experience: it is solitary and centers on a person’s soul and personal beliefs. Spirituality relies on releasing and breaking conformity and seeking enlightenment only through their beliefs and themselves. It follows no rules and has no boundaries as they can fully discover and seek their idea of truth and love.

“Spirituality is simply one’s ability to recognize that every person is more than just a human body—they are a soul that has unlimited potential. Every person is essentially a small god—a unique and powerful manifestation of existence that serves a purpose in this world.”

Religion is an organized sector of beliefs that a group of people follows. It centers on the teachings of models such as Jesus Christ and Muhammad. A person’s religion defines the truth, and fear of punishment or consequence is usually practiced.

Beginning the Journey of Spirituality

 1. Respect and Learn

Many people have experienced the journey you will be experiencing soon, so it is a good idea to seek and learn about their thoughts and comprehension. Spirituality is a very personal adventure, and it has been a quest that many have undertaken in the past. Seek time to learn and understand. That is the best way to learn more about yourself. (A book suggestion is “Pony Ride to an Awakening: The Journey of a Mystic”)

2. Understand that each spiritual journey is and will be different.

Each spiritual adventure is personal, and you are the one who can make the decisions for you. Do not follow the teachings of another person but instead follow instincts and intuition to make the journey the best for you and your spirit.

3. Start now.

Start now. If one is genuinely invested in a journey of self-discovery, go for it, take the plunge, and do not wait for tomorrow. Try to start as the person that you are right now and use this person as a starting point to create the best picture of yourself. Motivate yourself and try to seek personal development in everything you can do.

4. Live, laugh, and love, especially yourself.

Love yourself. That is one of the hardest things for many people, especially those suffering from low self-esteem, but it is one of the most integral parts of spirituality. Try to explore your flaws and mistakes and learn from them. Understand what keeps you moving and pursuing despite dark times and love those small things. Face the uncertainty and pain that it may cause you because, in the end, it will help you grow. It is best to seek help and ask for guidance while doing so. Seek a support group or a mental health professional for the best support needed, but one may also ask a friend or a mentor to help. Do not become ignorant about yourself and seek to be aware of all the small things.

5. Seek connections, especially to God.

Seek connections in the things that bring you joy and peace. Cultivate the things that keep you going every day despite the trials and tribulations you have experienced. If you believe in a God, try to seek a connection with Him and pray to Him. If you do not believe in a God, then that is okay. Remember that spirituality is a personal journey, and there is no need to follow the beliefs: it will only make you resent the person you are.

6. Practice.

Practice, practice, and practice. Spiritual growth and development happen when you make an effort to make it happen and not when you disregard your journey in essential aspects of your life. This will require much effort and time and self-awareness, and intuition, but in the end, you will begin to feel at peace and in touch with yourself. With time, it will always be worth the effort in the end.

7. Do not be afraid of uncertainty.

There will always be unanswered questions and uncertainty towards your journey, like life. There is no need to be afraid of them, and we should not be afraid. Instead, seek your view of the answers and allow yourself to grow instead of focusing on what could have been. Spirituality is personal: it is all up to the person who makes the decisions.
